A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
For many architects, the testing point of their authority and beliefs has been the construction of a university building. The condition has a more intense buzz than most high streets, and is populated by people who enjoy vigorous high testosterone, optimism, and oscillations of mood between morose negativism and energised positivism all in the same day. A very high proportion of university architects have spent majority of their time teaching; therefore, they should know about the fine distinction that lie beyond the mere apportionment of space or mannerist games. Thus, university buildings should be honoured by innovation, subtlety and wit. There is nothing more irritating than a building in which one gets lost – especially one in which the users are talking to someone, listening in a group while somebody talks, finding a quiet place in which to read or cruise on the laptop, needing the toilet or something out of a tap or moving from place to place. The second‐rate architecture of nearly every provincial high school deals with that; however, things become trickier if the institution wants to make a ‘statement’.
