Types of Fire‐Resistive Assemblies and Construction
The fire‐resistance property of an assembly is based on time, usually in either minutes or hours. The most common method for testing assemblies to determine their endurance is ASTM E 119. The ASTM International (ASTM) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) methods are specifically referenced in the international building code (IBC).In addition to tested assemblies, the IBC allows the use of GA‐600, which provides a listing of historically tested generic and proprietary assemblies; however, only those assemblies listed as GENERIC are accepted. The IBC identifies five types of fire‐resistive assemblies and three types of fire‐resistive construction. This chapter provides a general overview of the types of fire‐resistive assemblies and construction used in the IBC. The Fire‐Resistive Assemblies includes fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers and horizontal assemblies. The Fire‐Resistive construction includes exterior walls, interior bearing walls and structural frame.
