Structural Design Verifications, Structural Analysis of Tunnels
The ground pressure theories serve as thought models as aids to interpretation for similar or also new methods of construction and operation to understand and overcome interactions of ground pressure and tunnel construction methods. For tunnels in loose ground, shallow and deep tunnels are differentiated, with a tunnel being considered deep when the overburden is at least twice the diameter. This chapter briefly discusses the analytic methods of modelling tunnels. Four numerical processes are used in geotechnical engineering: finite element method (FEM), boundary element method (BEM), a combination of the two, and finite difference method (FDM). The chapter discusses two special applications of FEM to make clear its usefulness in tunnelling. Despite many reservations about the idealisations and the model character of calculation models in tunnelling, structural safety analyses have to be performed. The design work has to include structural calculations based on geological investigations and forecasts.
