Decontamination of Radioactive Aqueous Effluent by the Calcium‐Ferric Phosphate Process
This article discusses simultaneous precipitation of calcium and ferric phosphates in the waste as one of the processes considered for use in decontaminating low level radioactive aqueous waste in a Dorr sludge blanket clarifier at Lucas Heights, New South Wales, Australia. Pilot plant decontamination experiments were conducted to determine first the effect of lower concentrations of the precipitating ions, PO43‐ (40 ppm), Ca+ + (30 ppm), and Fe3+ (20 ppm) at lower pH values on radioactive water removal. Second, batch precipitation experiments were conducted to determine the concentration of dosing ions necessary for complete precipitation at a final pH of 9.5.
