Fruin introduced measures for people flow densities in a given area. These Level of Service measures can be used in designing spaces where people move, such as walkways, waiting areas or transit stations. In low‐rise public buildings, most of the traffic is handled by escalators or moving walkways since their handling capacity is much bigger than elevators. Pedestrian transit time in escalators can be longer than in with elevators. People flow in a corridor or a stair can be modelled with two parameters: the walking speed of people and density of people within a specified area. The pedestrian horizontal and inclined walking speeds on stairs decrease linearly when the stair gradient gets steeper. The handling capacity of a turnstile can be deduced from the service times in the same manner as the handling capacity of destination operation panels.
