Improving Manganese Removal Across Surface Water Biofilters
Since late 2012, Alameda County Water District (ACWD) has observed manganese breakthrough across its anthracite biofilters following winter shutdowns.
Decreased manganese removal was observed across ACWD's biofilters when water temperatures dropped below 15 °C, even for biofilters that remained online.
Source water quality, shutdown protocols, and empty bed contact time appeared to affect manganese removal across biofiltration at these lower temperatures.
Utilities with measurable biofilter influent manganese should consider more frequent monitoring (e.g., at least weekly) and consult The Water Research Foundation Project 4749.
