Irrigation Water Conservation in Saudi Arabia
Proper water management is the cornerstone to achieve sustainable crop production, and subsequently improve economic development and social wealth in both developed and developing countries. In a region haunted by extreme water scarcity, Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the shortage of water and the shortsighted misuse of stored underground water supplies. Most of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) regions are within the dry tropical zone for western continents. All irrigation scheduling methods consist of an irrigation criterion that triggers irrigation and an irrigation strategy that determines how much water to apply. The sustainable use of scarce water resources in KSA is a priority for agricultural development and sustainability. Adoption of modern irrigation techniques, improvement of soil properties, and deficit irrigation are needed to emphasize the increase in water use efficiency.
