Response of Rigid‐Plastic Plates
This chapter focuses on an upper bound method to estimate the load‐carrying capacity of rigid‐plastic plates. Plastic collapse mechanisms for plates are constructed, which contain rigid segments connected by plastic hinge lines, along which the bending moment is equal to the fully plastic bending moment (M0). The chapter also discusses the dynamic response of plates under pulse loading. The dynamic response of the structure under pulses of various shape could be equivalent to that under the rectangular pulses. If the dynamic load applied to a circular plate is slightly higher than its static collapse load, the deformation mechanism can be usually assumed to be the same as that occurring in the static case. Thus, the deflection of plates under the dynamic loading could be estimated directly from their static behavior. The membrane factor method could be used in analyzing the dynamic response of circular plates, rectangular plates and other plates with large deflections.
