Applications of Fluid Mechanics in Buildings
In built‐up lands in cities, buildings and infrastructures act as an inhomogeneous roughness against the flow, resulting in the formation of urban boundary layer (UBL). Understanding of wind profile within the UBL is important for many applications such as the calculation of wind load over buildings and infrastructure, pedestrian wind, thermal comfort, and building energy calculations. Building aerodynamic plays a crucial role in structure of the flow around a building. Jets and plumes leaving ducts are most of the time in the turbulent region as they mainly exceed the critical Reynolds number necessary for such flows to enter into the turbulence regime. The fundamental behind the dynamics of jets is amongst the most complex problems of fluid mechanics. The chapter explores the structure of turbulence boundary layer, which can be very essential in the wall modelling stages either empirically or numerically.
