A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter discusses a compelling account of key factors that marks out a Building Information Modeling (BIM) Manager and leads him or her to excel at their job. It also highlights the path BIM Management is taking from design coordination and model‐centric activities toward project management and data engineering. BIM Managers and technology leaders are at the spearhead of innovation that often makes a distinctive contribution to the competitiveness of the organization they work for. As a byproduct they are marketing their firm's BIM capabilities and establishing a sense of excellence that may be the decisive factor for clients to choose one consultant/contractor over another. Developing strong networks of BIM experts and advancing the discourse about BIM and beyond becomes an integral part of excelling as a BIM Manager and Design Technologist. Excellent communication skills‐the ability to listen, discuss, and explain ideas‐are vital to being a BIM Manager. It is experience in construction as an architect, engineer, or design manager that makes a BIM Manager excel. One essential lesson to be learned by any BIM Manager who wants his or her firm to excel in BIM is to avoid trying to achieve too much. Distinction and excellence in procuring BIM can best be reached with a BIM strategy that focuses on supporting a confined set of activities.
