A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Design Robotics: New Strategies for Material System Research
Martin Bechthold is a Professor of Architecture at Harvard University and the director of the Graduate School of Design's Technology Platform. He first participated at Smartgeometry (SG) as a workshop leader of the ‘Ceramics 2.0’ cluster in 2012. The cluster explored and defined new possibilities at the intersection of computational design, digital fabrication and the world of ceramics. In this chapter, Bechthold traces the evolution of design robotics, looking at the beginnings of robotic technology in architecture as well as contemporary trends. Design robotics, with its focus on expanding design scope based on the rigorous study of a particular material system, has become the modus operandi that pervades Design Robotics Group (DRG) research and teaching alike.
