This chapter considers the roles of three other important activities, apart from housing ‐ those of work, education and health. Work is the source of people's ability to survive and prosper and the basis of personal independence and self‐esteem. Education promotes the essence of successful living, allowing people to take control of their lives in worlds of fluctuating change. Health is crucial to both preserving life and to ensuring that it can be enjoyed to the full. The chapter is accordingly organized into the following five sections: Levels and justifications for community planning intervention The planning and organization of work The place of learning in community life The planning and delivery of health services Conclusion: the many facets of communities
