Conservation of Garden Buildings
Through case studies of significant but contrasting garden buildings at Stowe, Buckinghamshire and at Croome Park, Worcestershire, a range of philosophical approaches are considered for their repair. Guidance is given on the understanding and significance of a heritage asset through desktop research parallel with on‐site survey. At Stowe, the Temple of Concord and Victory required partial reconstruction; the ruined Temple of Friendship was conserved‐as‐found; the Chinese House was reinstated after a 250‐year absence; and the eighteenth‐century New Inn was restored with additions as a visitor centre. At Croome Park, Dunstall Castle underwent restoration work replacing lost masonry fabric, Pirton Castle was ‘conserved as found’ and Panorama was carefully repaired.
