A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter reviews scheduling in general and the critical path method (CPM) of scheduling in particular, focusing on how the schedule is used in project control. The discussion of scheduling techniques centers on basic methods; the checklist, schedule board, and bar chart. More sophisticated methods are used regularly with great success in the construction industry. The two well known are Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM). CPM has proven to be the most effective scheduling method for displaying and tracking project information necessary for managing and controlling time on a construction project. The project schedule, once complete and agreed upon, becomes the baseline for the progress and performance measurement. Performance is based on the relationship or interdependency between tasks on the schedule. Regular updates to the schedule allow the team to analyze the status of the project and what decisions or corrective actions are required.
