A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The performance is quantitatively checked by comparing the calculated values of demand parameters with the acceptance criteria for the desired performance level. This chapter describes the main checks that should be carried out during an assessment or strengthening methodology for the linear and the non‐linear methods alike. One important concept in the assessment of existing structures that is not present in the design process is the knowledge level with which the properties of the building components are known when calculating component capacities, and the corresponding knowledge factors or confidence factors. Among the different codes, only ASCE 41 provides some explicit rules on how to model the flexibility and nonlinear behavior of the beam‐column joints, although the information provided is somehow limited. In ASCE 41 the checks are carried out in terms of the joint shear strength.
