The Lure of “Magick Land”
British Artists and Italy in the Eighteenth Century
In the eighteenth century, Rome was a magnet for British tourists and artists who came to admire its ancient monuments, Renaissance masterpieces, and landscape—the “magick land” described by Virgil. Rome offered far better training opportunities than London: at the Academy of St Luke, in the studios of masters like Pompeo Batoni, or at the French Academy, where one could draw after the live model. Although Grand Tourists patronized artists, some turned to other occupations to survive—art dealer, tour guides, or excavators. While some artists remained in Italy, others, such as Joshua Reynolds and Robert Adam, returned home to pursue glittering careers. Many, however, failed to fulfill the ambitions that Italy had ignited in them. Artists who in Rome may have nurtured hopes of becoming history painters, sometimes reverted to “painting faces” to satisfy the English demand for portraits.
