The Intentional Destruction of Heritage
Bamiyan and Timbuktu
In recent years, cultural heritage has increasingly become a target of military and non‐military destruction aimed at harming the opponent's cultural identity. We can even observe deliberate destruction of a cultural identity for the sake of ideology. This chapter gives a first‐hand account of UNESCO's efforts to prevent the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas of Afghanistan in 2001, examining reasons for the destruction and the failure of UNESCO's efforts to stop it. The chapter analyzes why international conventions could not prevent the destruction, and why UNESCO is not in favor of reconstructing the Buddhas. Considering the deliberate destruction of heritage in Mali 2012/13, the chapter draws parallels with what happened in Afghanistan and asks why the international community was unable to prevent a further case of heritage destruction. It explains UNESCO's efforts to safeguard what remains of Mali's heritage and build necessary capacity among national staff.
