Apartment Tower
This chapter presents the history and development process of apartment tower. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of apartment tower. Manhattan is one of the very few cities where high‐rise buildings have been built in abundance since the beginning of the 20th century. It thus provides the most developed architectural vocabulary of a residential type that has recently regained importance in the discussion about the future of our cities, in the booming ‘New World’ of Asia and the Middle East as much as in ‘Old Europe’ and ‘Old America’. The spatial configuration of the early apartment towers with strong front and back polarisation was therefore not that different from typical 19th‐century buildings, seen in Paris or Berlin, and even more accentuated for the plots that were situated not on the corner, but in the middle part of the rectangular plots.
