River Flood Defences
Flooding is a natural process for many river systems and typically poses a problem only where the washlands and floodplains are put to use by humankind. In addition to community‐level flood defence measures, mitigation techniques applicable to individual dwellings or small groups of properties, are now available. This chapter discusses the issues of floods from rivers (fluvial flooding), and focuses upon the larger alleviation schemes both past and present, including recent innovations such as temporary and demountable barriers. The concepts of return periods and design standards are discussed along with the provision of flood forecasting and warning systems, which allows the at‐risk population to take appropriate action, where possible, before inundation commences. By combining a number of the methods discussed in the chapter, as appropriate to different locations and circumstances, it may be possible to continue to live and work in the floodplains for the foreseeable future.
