Landslides
This chapter discusses the different types of landslides and explains the main causes of landslides. It lists some of the most devastating landslides that have occurred during the last century. Landslide hazard identification can be performed in numerous ways. These can be categorised into three principal groups: desk study; site inspection; and detailed investigation. The desk study can access: historical information; existing susceptibility and hazard maps; geological information; and topographical information. The site inspection can reveal features associated with old and new landslide movements and impact on any adjacent infrastructure. The detailed investigation includes slope stability analysis, which accurately models the stability of the slope to assess if it is likely to fail. A number of landslide risk reduction options are available, and the selection will depend on the level of the risk in relation to the acceptable/tolerable level, which will be investigated alongside cost‐benefit analyses.
