Arsenic removal at llinois iron removal plants
Samples of source groundwater and treated water were collected from 31 iron‐removal plants with at least one well for which the arsenic concentration was above the maximum contaminant level of 10 μg/L. In most samples, arsenite made up at least 80% of dissolved arsenic. Arsenic removal efficiencies varied widely for iron concentrations < 3 mg/L, but for iron > 3 mg/L, soluble arsenic concentrations were lowered by at least 75%. A parametric model of arsenic removal that considers the effects of other adsorbing substances fit the data fairly well. Arsenic removal appeared to be much more influenced by dissolved organic matter than by silica, carbonate, or phosphate. An electrostatic adsorption model also fit the data fairly well but not as well as the parametric model.
