Visually attractive external areas present a good image to employees, visitors and clients on the premises. External areas can also provide opportunities for corporate social responsibility and environmental initiatives, such as wildflower gardens, beehives and habitats of local native species. In common with most services, gardening and maintenance of external areas can be done in‐house or via a specialist contractor. Such contractors should be members of the British Association of Landscape Industries. Some organisations encourage their catering team to grow herbs in adjacent external areas. In order to obtain expert help in landscaping operations, a landscape architect should be consulted. They can be commissioned for all sorts of tasks from a total redesign to the design of footpaths, fencing, turfing, and planting of trees, shrubs, hedges and bulbs. The management of parking in the workplace often falls into the FM’s remit.
