Bluff Body Aerodynamics
Bluff body aerodynamics of interest in structural engineering applications is associated with atmospheric flows, which are incompressible owing to their relatively low speeds. This chapter reviews fundamental fluid dynamics equations and considers flows in a curved path and vortex flows. It discusses boundary layers and flow separation. The chapter discusses wake and vortex formations in two‐dimensional (2‐D) flow. It reviews pressure, lift, drag and moment effects on 2‐D bodies, and presents information on flow effects in three dimensions. The complexities of wind flow introduced by the geometries of typical structures and by the characteristics of the terrain and obstacles upstream emphasize the need to carry out detailed studies of wind pressures experimentally using wind tunnel models and simulation. Wind flows around buildings are prime examples of 3‐D flows that cannot be described acceptably by 2‐D models.
