Concrete Structures
This chapter describes simple methods of designing reinforced concrete structures to resist fires, including information on thermal and mechanical properties of concrete at elevated temperatures. Calculation of the behaviour of concrete structures in fire depends on many factors, the most important being the fire limit state loads on the structure, the elevated temperatures in the concrete and reinforcing steel and the mechanical properties of the steel and concrete at those elevated temperatures. Reinforced concrete structures rely on the cover concrete to protect the reinforcing steel from elevated temperatures during fires. In any specific design of a concrete structure exposed to fires, it is essential to know the temperatures of the concrete and the reinforcing steel. The overall strategy for structural design of concrete structures exposed to fire is the same as for design at normal temperature, but taking into account the effect of elevated temperatures on the material properties.
