Necessity of Cognitive Modeling in BIM's Future
Building information modeling is one of the most challenging cognitive tasks that designers face. When it comes to the capital project delivery (CPD) process, cognitive skills for daily problem solving are not sufficient. One of the most challenging and rarely addressed aspects is how to intermarry digital models of building information with cognitive models of designers. Whereas recent advances in human‐computer interaction have had significant impact on software and product development in many areas, its impact on CPD software has been less significant. There is need to develop intelligent assistance for economic decision making in BIM for all facets of the CPD process. A cognitively conceived BIM system goes a long way in fulfilling the market expectations of integrated design process (IDP) and Lean Design approaches that are aiming at improving: design quality through realization of performance expectations, timely completion of CPD deliverables, and enhancing budget and value of design.
