A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
In the 1890s, industrial electric motors were introduced in elevator systems. On landing floors, the elevators were called by buttons near the elevator well. The kinetic energy and the striking force of the elevator doors were restricted by reducing their speed, and retractable door safety edges could sense if a passenger was in between the doors. The collective control principle was efficient, since the call service was not sensitive to car delays on some floors. Electronic control systems were able to track how long the registered calls had been on, and thus minimize the call times. The destination control system decreased the uncertainties in the call allocation, since the passenger destinations and the number of waiting passengers are known at the instant of call allocation. Queuing theory and dynamic programming have been applied to create deterministic models for optimal elevator control in certain traffic situations.
