A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter is organised in an ascending scale of spaces as a means of suggesting the applicability of the idea of simultaneity to context. Simultaneity implies a thinking beyond physical boundaries and transparencies to the social adjacencies of accumulated spatial arrangements and their narrative and choreography. The chapter begins at the scale of a room with Sigmund Freud's study and consulting room. Beyond the estate, the chapter examines the simultaneity that creates a complex layering for a city quarter on the edge of Trafalgar Square, focusing on the surroundings of the Church of St Martin‐in‐the‐Fields, London. Within the European city, the political boundaries defining the equivalent of the parish mark the community subset of the city beyond street or estate, but that lies within the next scale of political and social organisation ‐ the borough, complete with town hall and local jurisdiction.
