The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is a unique programme that commissions architecture for art's sake. It provides innovative architects, who have not previously built in the UK, with the opportunity to design a cutting‐edge structure for a summer show. Jeremy Melvin describes how Portuguese masters Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura, in collaboration with Cecil Balmond of Arup, have produced ‘an urban design’ that is perfectly calibrated to respond to its Hyde Park setting.
