Full‐scale test of methanol addition for enhanced nitrogen removal in a Ludzack–Ettinger process
Methanol addition to a Ludzack–Ettinger process was tested as a short‐term means of decreasing effluent nitrogen concentrations. Results from three experiments yielded gains of 0.05 to 0.11 mg nitrate decreased per milligram methanol added. Applications of the International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control Activated Sludge Model No. 1 corroborated these gains, suggesting that the activated sludge was able to metabolize the added methanol without acclimation. Model runs indicated that 70 to 80% of the increased nitrogen removal was from enhanced denitrification, with the balance from increased uptake of nitrogen for biosynthesis.
