Ant Colony Optimization for Ultra High Performance Concrete Structures
This chapter elaborates on the optimization of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) structures with a recently developed computational search algorithm, ant colony optimization. It describes a case study where the primary structure for a long‐span roof has been designed. A truss‐like structure has been proposed by the computational algorithm and developed to a feasible and economical solution. Tests on a Michell truss problem show that the algorithm results in expected optimal structures. When using new and promising materials, such as UHPC, the design algorithm provides a helpful tool in coming up with out‐of‐the‐box ideas about what structural topologies could be optimal. UHPC is a new and promising material in structural design. Tools such as the proposed ant colony algorithm can help in finding innovative designs.
