Demographics and Living Arrangements
The epidemiological transition, also referred to as the "crossing", started gaining momentum 100 years ago with the conquering of infectious and acute diseases, and the emerging of chronic and degenerative diseases. Two major demographic forces are driving this transition: increasing life expectancy and decreasing fertility. Longevity has been increasing for a long time. In the US and Canada in‐migration and higher fertility has kept the population relatively young. The most robust aging scenario is in Japan, which is experiencing gains in the oldest‐old through increasing longevity while suffering from low fertility. There are two main theories that predict the relationship between life expectancy and competency and they are diametrically opposed to one another: compression of morbidity and expansion of morbidity. The cultural phenomena of living in an extended family may also influence the choice of living arrangements in the future with more age‐blended families.
