Defining High‐Performing Buildings
The high‐performance building optimizes all parameters simultaneously: it is buildable, operable, usable, and sustainable. The design of a home is similarly high‐performing if it accurately reflects the individual preferences of its residents, whether they desire comfort, inspiration or even a quirky aesthetic that reflects their personal sensibilities. Truly high‐performance buildings require breakthrough performance that is difficult to achieve with today's methods, processes, and organizations because there is often a focus on a few project objectives to the detriment of others. Breakthrough performance depends on integration of building systems and the synchronization of these systems with the objectives of all key stakeholders. A building has many beholders or stakeholders, from the person or company paying for the building to the people using the building, the building designers, the visitors and neighbors, architecture critics and future buyers.
