A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Digital Crafting: Performative Thinking for Material Design
Mette Ramsgard Thomsen and Martin Tamke of the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture (CITA) in Denmark explore the notion of ‘digital craft’ through the construction of full‐scale ‘demonstrators’ that investigate the relation between design, computation, performance and making. CITA, a research unit within the architecture school, hosted the 2011 Smartgeometry (SG) conference in Copenhagen and its members regularly participate in SG workshops. In this chapter, they present a selection of research projects that have intersected with SG workshops which they relate to a new understanding of material and the new role of the designer as a ‘steerer’ of material properties, and therefore architectural performance. The three workshops presented in the chapter, explored the particular intersections between digital fabrication, material practice and design.
