Risk Characterizations
A risk characterization describes the expected threat to important functions or objects that are vulnerable to fire. Communication with others not in the fire business involves telling a story about what can happen and why. The goal is to provide a clear understanding of the type and nature of threat to the occupants and operations. Integrating the building's fire behavior with its functional operations provides an insight into the way the building will work during a fire. The main components of risk characterizations are located in Section 5 of the Interactive Performance Information (IPI) chart as: human safety, property protection, operational continuity, neighboring property, and environment. The IPI chart cells organize time and pre‐evacuation activities. Buildings do not provide unlimited time for egress, and prescriptive codes do not identify any available times. Codes specify good practices to help individuals leave a building safely in a fire emergency.
