A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

In this chapter, Shane Burger and Xavier de Kestelier reflect on the evolution in concept and organisation in Smartgeometry (SG) through the years towards the current format which sees the workshops as places for both digital and physical experimentation and prototyping. Reflective of the popular use of the word ‘mash‐up’, computational designers have begun to reappropriate software and hardware platforms that were never made for design into a unique ecosystem. The early creation of custom functions and associations within one platform (GenerativeComponents (GC)) naturally evolved into external software applications and like‐minded hardware‐based communities. Each year new technologies and processes from disciplines outside of architecture find their way into SG workshops, enabling new innovations in the design environment. We seek new threads running through the design process and promote their exploration, debate, thoughtful reflection and application in new design futures.
