A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter examines the cycle of regeneration and redevelopment that was pursued across London in the last 25 years, much of which drew on the inspiration of the LDDC's achievements in Canary Wharf. The method of public sector investment in transport and physical infrastructure in order to raise aspirations, boost development potential and assure investors proved to be a highly effective model, not just in East London but in stations, stadia, markets, waterfronts and retail hubs across the capital. The chapter also features case studies on the cultural revitalisation of the South Bank, and the empowering effect of Business Improvement Districts (BIDs). Although the physical rather than the social dimension of regeneration has proved more effective, its legacy is a much expanded system of flourishing centres of commerce, culture and street life.
