A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The overall aim of the desktop stage is to identify the specific elements that constitute the study area or areas. This involves separating out the different aspects of urban form and identifying the range of particular elements of each aspect that make up the study area. There are thus four broad kinds of desktop analysis: plan analysis; text analysis; quantitative analysis; and image analysis. The most central and familiar method of morphological analysis involves the analysis of maps and plans. Good working practice in starting the plan analysis is to prepare the working set‐up and workspace, allowing for laying out a number of maps and plans and other sources. The overlay is a technique common to GIS, CAD, illustration and image manipulation. Overlays are commonly used in producing images for plan sequencing and investigating the correlation between different aspects of urban form.
