A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism

Barcelona 22@District was a successful pioneering project, in terms of innovation and strategic planning. This chapter looks into the features of the 22@Barcelona project including the various parties involved, its innovative features. It aims to assess its shortcomings and addresses how they could be improved. The chapter highlights how this project could potentially evolve in the future so that it also accounts for the various projected urban complexities. In the wake of the 1992 Olympic Games, which were hosted in Barcelona, as a result of already being strategically located nearby the main city attractions, the district of Poblenou ended up gaining a better connection with the main infrastructures such as the airport and the port. The transformation of Poblenou into an integrated innovation district was based on five clusters that were classified in terms of territorial localization, typology and accessibility, and spatial planning.
