A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Neighbourhoods are the basic building block for citizen‐led city greening, including guerrilla gardening. Many neighbourhood greening schemes can combine to transform districts and ultimately whole cities. Streets can be transformed by reducing the dominance of the car and providing more space for pedestrians, cyclists and vegetation, including trees and rain gardens. Increasing public participation in urban greening can create unique places as demonstrated by squatter settlements, community parks and urban farming initiatives. Where space is limited in the urban core, greening can still occur with green roofs and living walls. These features are an essential component of green building and water sensitive urban design, solving problems of urban heat islands, lock of biodiversity and the absence of space to grow food or relax.
