A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A site investigation should always begin with the evaluation of existing documents, such as geologic maps and mapping of existing rock exposures. Besides test pits, core drillings are the most frequently used way to explore the existing ground. The types of drilling bits and core barrels as well as the drilling and core diameters are described in this chapter. Exploration adits and shafts, test excavation and exploration during construction lead to an improvement of the information, obtained from drillings. Evaluation of the results of mapping and the development of a structural model are discussed at the end of this chapter.
