Clinic Planning Concepts
This chapter addresses how legislative, economic, demographic, and cultural factors are broadly affecting clinic design across the United States. The overarching goal for design professionals as they develop clinic floor plans is to efficiently meet the programmatic needs of a clinical practice while maintaining (and ideally enhancing) the quality of the workplace for staff and the care provided for patients. Prevention and early treatment of pediatric behavioral health conditions in the clinic setting are expected to reduce both individual and public health costs. Clinics are still determining how large a healthcare practice must be to support integration of behavioral health services. Wayfinding design for clinics encompasses more than graphic artistry and the strategic placement of site and building signage. Safety, privacy, acoustics, universal accessibility, efficiency, and wayfinding remain top design considerations for clinics.
