Historic Parks and Gardens: the Planning System and Other Conservation Tools
Unlike other nationally designated elements of the historic environment such as listed buildings or Scheduled monuments, nationally designated designed landscapes do not enjoy any statutory protection arising from the fact of their designation. This means that it is essential when considering proposals for inappropriate or damaging change affecting a designed landscape to make use of as many aspects of the planning and designation systems together to avoid unnecessary damage. This chapter sets out the relevant aspects of the designation and planning systems and highlights where, and how, these dovetail in order to provide a degree of protection for designed landscapes.
