Dry Feed of Ground Quicklime Without a Slaker
Pulverized quicklime used without a slaker has successfully supplanted hydrated lime at nearly 20 plants, large and small, mainly in the Southeast. Some use it for softening, others for pH correction. In each plant, economy in material cost was the prime factor in the decision to adopt direct feed of pulverized quicklime. Trials of pulverized quicklime and its adoption for use by direct dry feed were made at the McNeil St. plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, primarily for the purpose of correcting operational difficulties and better regulating the pH control, although the importance of reduced cost was appreciated. The behavior of pulverized quicklime was studied and is reported here.
