Architects are pathologically opposed to approving anything, including programmes. Very occasionally, a quantity surveyor preparing bills of quantities will include an item stating that the contractor must produce a programme for the architect's approval. Even if there is nothing in the preliminaries to suggest that the architect must 'approve' the programme, it is very common for a contractor to send its programme to the architect with a request for approval. When architects say that the contractor’s programme is approved, all they are really saying is that the contractor can construct the building like that if it wishes to do so. Generally, the fact that the architect has approved the contractor’s drawing will not move the design responsibility from the contractor to the architect. Under a traditional contract, the contractor sends a sub‐contractor’s drawings for the architect’s approval before they are manufactured.
