Reducing Nitrogen and Phosphorus Pollution and Protecting Drinking Water Sources
Due to an increase in nitrogen and phosphorus (N/P) pollution of U.S. waters, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has reinvigorated its focus on efforts to reduce the amount of N/P entering U.S. waters. The article discusses public health effects of N/P pollution, along with the far‐reaching scope and economic effects of nutrient pollution in drinking water. The article discusses a guidance publication, “Recommended Elements of a State Nutrients Framework,” recently published by the USEPA, that provides an approach for ongoing collaboration between USEPA and the states in a joint effort to reduce N/P pollution. The article also discusses ongoing USEPA activities related to nutrient pollution reduction.
