Welded Connection
Very simple models are used to compare the traditional method of designing welds and the novel component‐based finite element method. The chapter contains an overview of examples, a comparison of results of both methods, and a benchmark case. The first section contains transversally and longitudinally loaded welds where the difference is minimal. The second section presents larger differences due to eccentricities in the cleat connection. While the traditional design allows for simplification and neglect of certain phenomena, the numerical model takes these into account. The third section compares the design of a weld loaded in a combination of shear and bending moment in a shear tab connection. The differences are within 5% when assuming elastic stress distribution in welds.
