Postponement is when the architect, or in some cases the employer, instructs the contractor to stop doing something that is part of the work. What matters to the contractor is that the work is being held up and the postponement will inevitably have a knock‐on effect to other parts of the building, causing delay and additional costs. A long delay to any part of the building will have consequences for the employer as well as the contractor and a delay to the whole building could be a serious matter. The contractor will be entitled to an extension of time as a result of the delay and there will probably also be a claim for additional costs. Many architects think there is an implied right, one might almost say a 'divine right', for an architect to do various things in connection with the contract.
