Multihousing Common Laundry Facilities Are a Significant Source of Water Conservation
This article discusses common‐area laundry rooms in multihousing properties in terms of water conservation. The article cites a 2002 water‐use survey that compared washing machine usage rates in apartment units versus that of coin‐operated machines in common‐area laundry rooms. The study found that residents with in‐unit washers used 3.3 times more water for their laundry than their counterparts in buildings with common‐area laundries. The article also discusses how common‐area laundry rooms reduce construction costs, and describes several water‐saving programs that are being implemented in various cities across the country.
