Notebooks, Early Sketches and Late Drawings
To observe representation in the design process the author has chosen three formats: notebooks which are the more private notations of a practitioner; the first sketches of a project, which is when an idea is put on paper; and the final representations of a project (renderings, diagrams, etc) – what is necessary to convey the final worked‐out idea to the client and the public. The professional drawings are social, they are discussed, shared, critiqued by everybody in the office. The notebook drawing is done as a solitary action. The early sketch is an idea jotted down at the beginning of creating a design; often it is a mere scribble, a notation in drawn form that sets a direction. The late drawing presents a developed idea and in most cases is a 3D rendering. Landscape representation is in an ongoing battle to free itself from the Picturesque.
