This article provides a brief overview of the total maximum daily load (TMDL) rulemaking, which limits pollution from nonpoint sources that are currently unregulated by having states identify waterways that are not meeting ambient water quality standards for their designated uses and sets pollutant‐specific TMDLs to achieve those standards.
